Loughton's history goes back a long way.
The remains of an Iron Age settlement
were found close to the town. By the
Middle Ages the layout of the town was
established around the present High
Street. The town grew slowly until the
railway came in 1850. Primary schools in
and around Loughton include Alderton
Infant and Junior School, St John Fisher
RC Primary, Staples Road Infant and Junior
School, Hereward Primary School, Thomas
Willingale Primary School, Whitebridge
Infant and Junior School, and High Beach
C of E Primary School.
